知道 'Then' 與 'than' 的差別

'Then' vs. 'than': Knowing the difference

By Laura Hale Brockway | Posted: December 4, 2014

Like many other PR Daily readers, certain writing errors annoy me.

For example, I can't stand the misuse of "comprise" and "compose, or using a hyphen when a dash is called for.

All good writers know that writing isn't easy.

Neil Gaiman, author of "Coraline" and other works, once said: "Being a writer is a very peculiar sort of a job: It's always you versus a blank sheet of paper (or a blank screen), and quite often the blank piece of paper wins."

It's no surprise that 2012's bestseller lists in Britain and America are dominated by EL James with the Fifty Shades trilogy and by Suzanne Collins with her Hunger Games books.

Then there are other writers you might expect such as JK Rowling (The Casual Vacancy) and Jeff Kinney (the Wimpy Kid stories).

But the inclusion of a handful of less obvious names may cheer those who think publishers and readers no longer value the interesting one-off novel.

Before I Go to Sleep, Gone Girl and Me Before You are intelligent, well-written hits. Their authors all believe internet buzz around a new book is increasingly key to success.

British people are used to the stream of Americanisms entering the language. But some are worse than others, argues Matthew Engel.

Softcover: UK: In living memory

As the good times roll in Hugo Hamilton’s tale of life in a prosperous Ireland, the past is brushed under the carpet

By Ann Enright THE GUARDIAN , LONDON

Hugo Hamilton grew up in a Dublin household where the English language was forbidden, and he has delighted in its illicit and innocent pleasures ever since. In his memoir A Speckled People he wrote about speaking German to his mother and Irish to his nationalist father, while, beyond their front door, children played, mothers shopped, and rock bands sang in the former oppressors’ tongue.
