Workplace religion makes people happier

22/12/2014

Employees are often happier if they openly discuss their religious beliefs in the workplace, according
to a Kansas State University researcher.

Sooyeol Kim, doctoral student in psychological sciences, took part in a survey of nearly 600 adults across various industries in the US and South Korea, and found that talking about religion could also have a positive effect on job satisfaction.

Sooyeol Kim,

While all of the respondents were Christian, a variety of denominations - including Presbyterian,
Baptist and Methodist - were named.

Participants were asked about the importance of religion and its impact on their identity.

The research suggests it may be beneficial for employers to go beyond encouraging office Christmas parties by celebrating holidays and festivals associated with a range of religions.

Kim said many people feel religion is the "core of their lives". He added: "Being able to express important aspects of one's life can influence work-related issues, such as job satisfaction, work performance or engagement."

Chartered Psychologist Dr Roderick Cowie comments:

"Mainstream psychology takes very little interest in religion. It tends to behave as if Freud was right when he predicted, in The Future of an Illusion, that ‘reason will replace faith in God’ – and therefore, findings that involve it can only be of transient interest.

"News bulletins should raise suspicions: if it is an illusion, it seems to be as durable as the Muller-Lyer, and to have a great deal more influence on people’s lives.

"The findings here should not be surprising. Christian publications frequently report a sense of persecution.

"What is interesting is that Lyons et al. bring the issue into the scientific arena. As they note, there is a need to find balances between allowing open expression and preventing unacceptable proselytising.

"It is a tricky problem, and as the news bulletins indicate, it may be a good deal more important than psychology has commonly allowed. Accepting that we need some data is a useful first step."
