Negative moods lead to analytic processing

People are more likely to process information in an analytical way if they are in a negative mood, a new study has found.
According to research by the University of Illinois, published in the Journal of Advertising, a person's emotional state can influence how they perceive and process media content, such as advertisements.
For instance, a negative mood leads to more analytic processing, while a positive mood can prompt more holistic processing.
Researchers therefore believe that anyone who wants to multi-process effectively "should do so in a good mood".
Analytic processors were said to focus largely on specific items and evaluate them in isolation from the environment in which they are found.
By contrast, the research stated holistic processors usually "take in everything at once or as part of a whole".
Professor Brittany Duff, one of the scientists behind the study, noted that analytic processors tend to "fall right off as soon as you make them do something else".
However, holistic processors remained just as effective at remembering the ads they were exposed to, with Professor observing: "It's like you did nothing to them."
Professor Willem Kuyken from the Univesity of Oxford, a Chartered Psychologist, comments:
"These interesting findings fit with the work we do at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. We have long known that in depression an analytical style of processing maintains and exacerbates depression. Mindfulness training seems to be helpful for people at risk for depression because it helps people recognise and step out of analytical thinking into a more “being” mode, that involves awareness, embodiment and an enhanced capacity for responsiveness. It is so interesting to see this being extended into new areas."
