Children with autism can become more assertive if they have grown up with pets in the home,
suggests a new study.
Research by the University of Missouri, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, revealed that the social skills of youngsters with the condition tend to be better if
they have lived with dogs or other domestic animals.
Gretchen Carlisle, the researcher behind the study, believes this is because pets can act as
"social lubricants" and increase the chances of children talking and engaging with their peers.
"Kids with autism don't readily engage with others, but if there's a pet in the home that the
child is bonded with and a visitor starts asking about the pet, the child may be more likely to
respond," she commented.
Ms Carlisle added that if an autistic child has a pet in the home, they will be more likely to
introduce themselves to others, ask people for information and respond to questions.
